Since 1971, there have been four songs from Malta almost making it into the top position at the Eurovision Song Contest. In 1971 Malta sent the song ‘Marija_l-Maltija’, by Joe Grech to compete in Ireland. The song is one of the only two songs representing Malta to be sung in Maltese at the Eurovision to date.  The other is the 1972 submission, ‘L-Imhabba’, by Joe Cutajar & Helen Micallef.

However, to date, the best points achieved by Malta came about in 2005. That year the song ‘Angel’ by Chiara, earned 192 points and climbing 2nd place in the competition. Unfortunately the following year, in 2006, the song ‘I Do’  by Fabrizio Faniello, received just 1 point from the jury. This makes it the least achieving song for Malta to date.

Now this year we have Destiny representing Malta with the song ‘Je me Casse’. The song, which is already proving to be quite popular, is setting Destiny up high on the charts and many predictions of a win. But will she manage to gain the points and at least match the positions of previous high gainers? We will find out on Saturday during the finals of the Eurovision Song Contest 2021. Until then let us look at those songs that remain the best achievers for Malta so far.

Malta Eurovision Songs That Almost Made It

1992 – ‘Little Child’ sung by Mary Spiteri.

Mary Spiteri, Malta’s diva of song, competed in the 1992 Eurovision Song Contest in Sweden, with the song ‘Little Child’. It earned itself 123 points placing itself in 3rd place.

1998 – ‘The One That I Love’ sung by Chiara.

In 1998 Chiara’s song, ‘The One That I Love’ was given 165 points, earning Malta’s submission 3rd place at the 1998 Eurovision Song Contest in the United Kingdom.

2002 – ‘7th Wonder’ sung by Ira Losco.

In 2002 Malta sent, Ira Losco and her song, ‘7th Wonder’ as its submission to the Eurovision Song Contest in Estonia. The song placed 2nd place with 164 points.

2005 – ‘Angel’ sung by Chiara.

In 2005 Malta chose the song ‘Angel’ sung by Chiara as its submission into that year’s Eurovision Song Contest which was held in Ukraine. The song placed 2nd place with 192 points making it the most achieving song to represent Malta to date.

Will Destiny change Malta’s destiny with her popular song ‘Je me Casse’ and break all records this year? It will be great for Malta to have the privilege to host the Eurovision Song Contest in 2022?

The moment all Malta eagerly awaits year after year is finally here. Well, almost here as tonight we got to experience the first of the Eurovision Song Contest 2021 semi-finals.

Destiny – Eurovision Song Contest 2021 The journey so far.

Destiny was chosen to represent Malta in 2020, but that never happened due to Covid. This was very disappointing, not only for Destiny and all the other singers but also for the Maltese public. Just in case you are not aware, the Maltese public, in general, loves the Eurovision Song Contest. Every year hopes rise high. So far Malta managed to get into the second and third places a couple of times before, but never the top spot. Destiny was going to represent Malta in 2020 with the song ‘All Of My Love’. Watch the video below.

Destiny and Year 2021

Suddenly after a long year of ups and downs, we’re in 2021. But now we have vaccines and have a better knowledge of Covid, so the game is on. Then in March, we hear for the first time Malta’s entry sung by Destiny ‘Je Me Casse’.  And boy what a surprisingly refreshing change to Malta’s usual choice of songs. It becomes a hit with the Maltese public straight away.

The heat is on and Destiny quickly became a favorite to win. The song and the accompanying ‘hot’ video are a hit over socials, with a whopping  8M+hits and counting on Youtube.

The Rehearsals

In May, Destiny leaves Malta with her entourage and heads off to Rotterdam for her rehearsals for the big night the week to follow. She hits all local news outlets, except ours, and her costume creates a social media frenzy. To place it simply, people did not like her pink costume. Now that the night is on, here is our view of Destiny’s pink costume in just three words, we loved it!

Next rehearsal Destiny shows herself in a silver costume and pink boots. We love the silver costume too, but the boots don’t really match.

But then the final dress rehearsal comes along and Destiny seems to be complete, silver dress with silver boots and stuns everyone. Interpretation, attitude, and energy portray a true star that will shine long after this contest is over.

The Night Arrives

So we are finally here, the night all Malta awaits and we know Destiny will be closing the show. The show is being presented by Nikkie de Jager, Chantal Janzen, Jan Smit and Edsilia Rombley. In total sixteen songs will be competing for the ten spots in the finals up for grabs tonight.  But at the time of writing Ireland is about to go on. So far we’ve seen some fascinating costumes and gimmicks including a Russian Doll costume and CGI magic effects but none of the songs we’ve heard so far are ones we like much. Ireland is currently finishing off its song and this is the first one that we like here at Entertainment Malta.

This is followed by a ‘Lady Gaga’ soundalike with a devilish theme and exactly after an act that had time to work on his angelic wings! We are currently listening to Croatia and we like this song too. Another song we like is that of Israel which hits a whopping B6 note, the highest note in Eurovision history. Azerbaijan also provides us with a song we like.

Finally, the moment we’ve been waiting for arrives and the presenters introduce Destiny. From the first shot, Destiny rules the TV screen in her silver dress and her interpretation throughout is simply fantastic. Great voice, full of energy, and flawless. Otherwise in just one word; WOW! While we are happy to see Malta making it through the finals, it is a little disappointing to see Ireland and Croatia leave the competition at this point.

Je Me Casse starring Destiny

Boy, hasn’t Destiny done it with her entry this year or what?

Je Me Casse is Malta’s song for the Eurovision Song Contest 2021 and it comes with a video that has it all! Colorful scenes, exciting cinematography, sex appeal,  spectacular choreography and excellent direction! But what tops it all is the song and the singer. Destiny Chukunyere’s voice is extraordinary and this girl is destined for greatness!

If you have not seen the video yet (and if you are living in Malta that would be impossible) then do take a look. And once you do, you will want to watch it again and again.

With the odds in favour of this young and dynamic singer, Malta stands a good chance of obtaining good points from its peers across Europe.

We are looking forward to the return of the Eurovision Song Contest this year, being the 65th edition. Originally the 2020 edition was planned to be the 65th edition but that was canceled due to the global pandemic. However, the contest is still to be held in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. The Netherlands won the contest in 2019 with the song “Arcade” by Duncan Laurence.

We wish Destiny the best of luck and we hope she will enjoy the whole experience to the full. Here at Entertainment Malta will be supporting her as much as the rest of the island will do too.

Mużika Mużika Maltese Song Festival Continues

This is the second day of this year’s ‘Mużika Mużika’ Maltese song festival.

EPISODE 2 – ANother Great Opening

The evening opens up with the previous winner of the last festival, which was held on a smaller scale in 2013, Olivia Lewis. We also learn that Olivia is expecting a baby and we wish her the best of luck and good wishes.

What is great about this festival is that all the music is live, including the orchestra. Conducting the orchestra is Aurelio Belli and Ryan Paul Ablea. Presenting last night’s show was charismatic Keith Demicoli this time accompanied by the lovely Lara Azzopardi.

Mużika Mużika Maltese Song Festival

Throughout the first edition of this Maltese Song Festival, we are sure the excitement is increasing amongst all those participating. The impressive stage, a great presentation and great Maltese songs guarantee the show to become popular over the next few days. However, for now, let us take a look at the first evening of ‘Mużika Mużika’.

Episode 1 – An Impressive start

The evening opens up with a great original song played by the Malta Philanthropic  Orchestra and some popular singers as backing vocals. Although there is no audience present, there seems to have been no cut down on the budget for the set of this beautiful stage.

To complement the stage we have the charming ex-News Broadcaster and household name Keith Demicoli together with the beautiful Claire Aguis Ordway. Together they make a great team and we seem to be in for an exciting evening ahead.

The Competing Songs and Singers

During the following 2 nights, twenty songs will be sung. Out of these twenty, people get to choose twelve to compete in the finals on the 20th of March 2021.

Yesterday we got to see all the songs competing and people got to vote on them by SMS. These votes amount to 20% of the votes and 75% of the votes are given by a panel of 9 judges.

The third and last semi finals is on tonight of Malta’s got Talent and like many people, we are looking forward to what this program will bring to the stage and on our Television sets. As usual, Gordon opens this evenings show with his costume choice! Watch the clip below before reading the rest below!

Finally we see Gordon dressed great to present and host the show! Good choice this time around Gordon!

Tonight’s Show

After briefly explaining the voting process and introducing the Judges, Gordon talks a little with judge Ray Attard. And now, the show takes off!

Yulan Law

This young singer with a powerful voice gives us a great interpretation of Sia’s ‘Chandelier’. What a fantastic and exceptional performance to open up a show. The Judges giver this prosperous eleven year old singer a well deserved standing ovation.

Claudia Santamaria

We saw this young ballet dance her way through to the semi finals with ease. This time we also get to see her sing. An excellent representation of a great French classic by a young Spanish artist.

Justin Micallef

The fire performer brings some hot stuff to the stage with a fantastic, eye catching and dangerous act. The well choreographed movements show the precision and dedication this performer brings to the stage.

Marissa Bose

We watched this pole dancer slide her way through into the semi finals with an artistically expressive act. Tonight we see that again, a precision act that depends of the strength of the body, that not only empowers the person performing but also shows that artistic edge.

Nicole Hammet

We loved Nicole in her auditions and have great hopes for this singer with a wide choice of vocal interpretations to choose from. Again she gets to show her powerful voice singing ‘Music was my first love‘ with an operatic twist.

Mike Mock

Now we are in for some mental magic. The 55 year old mind performer goes on to try and impress people with his ‘powers’ by guessing Judge Zerafa’s  thoughts and choices on a blackboard and the time on a clock.

Il-Lapes

This is Malta’s own original Rap act with original lyrics and always with a message. Tonight we get to see this rapper accompanied by a range of additional vocals and musicians.  The variety and interpretation is simply amazing and everything combined made this one great act.

Inefable

This great acrobatic team bring to us some great moves to a pirate theme. With Ariel, trampoline and stage floor moves, their precision bring about one impressive, entertaining and spectacular act.

Kian Schranz

This was the only ventriloquist act on Malta’s Got Talent this season. Despite his young age, Kian has complete control over Anthony and Lola bringing a smile to viewers’ faces. We don’t know why but we love the out of tune interpretations these three give us and tonight’s choice of song, ‘Xemx’ was one to remember.

Kinetic Dance Academy

The sage is set to represent a classroom and the team are all in their school uniform. We get to see them perform some great energetic moves, well timed and synchronized.

The Results

After watching all the 10 acts and with the public voting process over these are this evening’s results of the top 4 acts making their way through.

The two acts with the least votes, are Yulan Law and Nicole Hammet. This means that each judge gets to cast a vote for the act they prefer. Nicole Hammet was Judge Sara Zerafa’s Golden Buzzer and gives her her vote. Judges Ray, Maxine and Howard go on to give their vote to Yulan Law. This means that Yulan Law goes on to join the other two finalist of this evening’s show.

Malta’s Got Talent second semi final night brings about another great show with lots of surprises. This should be a difficult voting choice for the public voting since there are three Golden Buzzer acts competing during this second round of the semi finals. There are another 10 acts during this round, three of which will be voted to pass on to the finals. The voting process remains the same as in the first semi finals show.

Tonight’s Show

Once again host, Gorden Bonello, surprises  us with his unusual choice of attire for this evening’s show! Seriously Gordon, who is choosing your outfit and why? Besides that, let’s get on to tonight’s acts and see what they have to offer, hoping it’s better than Gordon’s attire.

Concept of Movement

Here we get to see this great dance group, judge Howard’s Golden Buzzer,  perform a nice routine. With great comments from all the judges and a perfectly timed routine, we hope the audience at home pass these to the finals.

Maximum Lock

For obvious reasons, this precision stunt car act couldn’t be performed on stage so the judges were taken to a different locality to view the act live. While we believe that this act was passed through to the semi finals for variety reasons, we do not believe that this act should not go any further. That decision will be taken by the public’s votes later on during the show.

Yan Camilleri

This young musical singer provides us with a rendition of ‘Music of the Night‘, from the famous musical the ‘Phantom of the Opera’. With a nicely dressed up stage, suitable for the act, our young performer goes on to provide us with his rendition of Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber’s legendary composition. We feel the song, that requires a manly and mature touch to it, may have been too ambitious for such a young voice. What do you think?

Michele Panarosa

This amazing singer amazes us once again with a great voice and overall performance of the song, ‘Like it Like That’. This is a voice we love love hearing and we hope that this singer makes it through to the finals. Once again it is in the hands of the voting public.

Ria Gauci

The young solo dancer once again embraces the stage as she energetically  takes it over with her ability to provide a powerful acrobatic dance. Then when you think you have seen all she can do, she goes on to surprise us with an Ariel Hoop act in between it all. This is another act well deserving a place in the finals.

Emma Cutajar

This young songwriter/musician/singer impressed us and the judges with her original song and performance during her auditions, earning her a Golden Buzzer pass from judge Maxine, in tonight’s semi finals. Once again she goes on to give us another original song and once again we are impressed.

Andrea Camilleri

Another young singer this time with dancers accompanying her along with  nice visuals to complete the performance. Andrea gives us her rendition of Christina Aguilera’s ‘Loyal Brave True’, that we simply love.

Mario Morales

The local TV personality goes on to sing ‘It’s a Wonderful World’ for us and the judges, accompanied by some dancers. Whilst we find him charming and of great nature we feel that his rendition of this iconic song was just not as strong as it should have been. Judge Howard may have felt this too as he goes ahead a presses that dreaded red X buzzer! However what shocks us most is the reply to Judge Maxine’s comments made after his performance about the wrong choice of act that accompanies his song. Mario’s reply “I didn’t choose the act, the act was chosen for me” and Maxine’s reaction “Maybe that was our fault then” gives away some secrets of the show. Morgan Mage

A young magician with a musical prediction and a surprise up his sleeve. This articulated youngster goes on to give a good performance guessing the judges’ musical choices and then surprises us further with his musical ability by playing the guitar to the correct chosen tune. Whilst his mentalism trick was good, we honestly think this kid has better opportunities with his musical talent and great guitar playing.

Joemike and Layden

The father and son act that stole the nation’s  hearts goes on to give us their Makkjetti act for this round of Malta’s Got Talent. Everything goes well until little Layden forgets the last verse, however he continues with the act and faces the situation like a great man. This is Judge Gordon’s Golden Buzzer act and another act we love and wish to see making it to the semi finals.

The Results

After watching all the 10 acts and with the public voting process over these are this evening’s results of the top 4 acts making their way through.

The two acts with the least votes, are Ria Gauchi and Emma Cutajar. This means that each judge gets to cast a vote for the act they prefer. With two judges voting in favour of Ria and the other two in favour of Emma the final decision now lies on the amount of public votes each received. Ria Gauchi manages to dance her way into Malta’s Got Talent finals.

Finally the time many have been waiting for is with us with the first semi finals of Malta’s Got Talent. This time the show is a live transmission from the MFCC. There was no live audience present but members of the public were able to attend virtually on screens behind the judges. The show’s host Gordon Bonello, opened the show with a satirical song, mainly directed at the judges’ and their reactions during the previous auditions. Gordon’s performance was enhanced with dancers. Whilst Gordon’s hosting was great throughout the show, we are not so sure about his choice of attire!

Understanding The Voting Process

Out of the ten acts we get to see tonight, only three can pass on to the finals. The public can vote for the acts they prefer the most via SMS and the top four acts with the most votes have a chance to be amongst the three chosen. Two acts with the most votes automatically make it through, whereas two acts are left for the judges to decide on. If there is a tie between the four judges, then the act with the most public votes via SMS gets on to pass on to the finals. We expect this to be an entertaining show.

Southville Dancers

This dance group are the first to show what they can perform on tonight’s semifinals. Their dance routine was great, a physical message against oppression and worthy of a semi final act. We do not know how this looked in real life on stage, however we can notice that the lights were not that great looking on television. With several silhouettes and back screen flashes it was difficult to see all the moves and techniques that the dancers brought in to their act.

Geneve Dimech

This young singer/musician gave us another great rock song. Geneve went on to show us her great talent through a strong voice and a wowing performance. The song she sang was dedicated to her nan who recently passed away.

Matthias Camilleri

This pole acrobatic act was themed on the war time. During the act, Matthias showed his skills time and time again with his ability to climb and use the pole in what appears to be a smooth and easy manner. HIs drops were impressive, but there was a drop that made us think that he did not stop on time. Watch the video and tell us what you think?

Sy and Ezaya

These two young Ballroom and Latin dancers show us what they do in a very good dance performance themed to bond, surprising us with a different style dancing to ‘Fireball’. With some nice choreography and a fairly good performance despite their young age, is it enough for them to make through to the finals? We just have to wait and see.

Chris Tanti

This fine guitarist played his guitar to the tune of ‘Isn’t She Lovely’ offering viewers at home a great relaxing rendition with his melodic version of the song.  The full time musician goes on to show us the best one can do with a such a talent and deserves his place in the semi finals. But will this be enough for this fine musician to make his way to the finals?

Christian Alakkad

The 5 year old genius who made his way to the semi finals through Ray Attard’s Golden Buzzer is back on stage to impress us with his memory skills. Christian goes on to impressively and correctly guess the countries and capitals of 67 consecutive flags shown on the screen in just mins. We do not know how entertaining this act is for a general performance but we are sure that this little boy has a great future with Quiz Show Competitions once he grows a little older.

Izzy

Izzy was not official an act that passed on to the semi finals. However Izzy’s act replaced ‘Yada on Heels‘ that was disqualified due to not being able to attend the semi finals because of Covid related reasons.  Izzy went on to give an energetic solo dance performance. We are wondering if judge Ray Attard was being sarcastic whit his comment “Huge Presence”.  What do you think?

Joseph Mangion

Back on stage for the semi finals the human fireworks sound machine, Joseph Mangion or as better known il-Kapxi. Dressed in shorts and a T-Shirt with Kapxi Fireworks written all over it he goes on to give us us viewers more of his ‘Xpuff, XPaff and Tik Tik Tik Tik’ sounds. He is accompanied by a traditional live Band and his act his enhanced with some visuals of Malta fireworks on the screen behind him. Apart from that il-Kapxi reveals a little more of what we expect to see on national television in such a show!

Bruce Bruce Micallef Eynaurd

This comedy act made it through the auditions with a great unique performance. However during the semi finals we feel like Bruce’s performance was less almighty and a little bit off topic at the moment. This was also noted by the judges who did not fail to mention it in their comments. While we get Bruce’s sense of humor and personally found some it quite funny at times, we do not see people in general perceiving it as an act worthy of the finals. We will know soon enough.

Ike and Kaya

The young and talented sweethearts Singer and Rapper are up on stage giving a great enjoyable performance. Tell us, how can not not love this adorable duo? This cool and sweet act may well make it to the finals.

It was surprisingly shocking to see some of the more deserving acts to be outed by the Human Fireworks Sound Machine but the votes are in the public’s hands this time. We await further surprises next week when three of the semi finalist acts are Golden Buzzer receivers!
