The Singing Doctor, Gianluca Bezzina is the winner of the third edition of Mużika Mużika with his love song ‘Sabiħa’.

The song, written by Joe Julian Farrugia, and musical arrangements by Philip Vella received 122 points in total. It also was the song with the most votes from the judges and the public. Lisa Gauci and Drakard came in 2nd place with 99 points for their song ‘Jekk Mhux Int’.

The high-standard festival is organised by Festivals Malta. All songs are sung live in the Maltese language and the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra accompanies the singers. This year, the festival was hosted by Keith Demicoli, Claire Aguis, and Moira Delia.

During the final show, last year’s winner Kurt Calleja sang his winning song ‘Bla Tarf’ as a duet with Ira Losco during televoting.

Gianluca Bezzina, a doctor by profession, represented Malta at the Eurovision Song Contest 10 years ago.

After ten episodes we now have all the nine Finalists Malta’s Got Talent 2020 ready to compete this Sunday during the finals. This is the complete list of the nine finalists, one of whom will make history, walking away with €25,000 as the winning act of this talent competition.

As we have done in our Semi Finalists List, we are categorizing the acts accordingly to the genre and talent. Kindly note that the lists are in alphabetical order with no ranking order.

So from our list we can see that we have three dance acts, four singing acts and two variety acts that will be competing for the prize in this week’s finals. From the nine acts making their way through to the finals, two were Golden Buzzer acts.

Malta’s Got Talent second semi final night brings about another great show with lots of surprises. This should be a difficult voting choice for the public voting since there are three Golden Buzzer acts competing during this second round of the semi finals. There are another 10 acts during this round, three of which will be voted to pass on to the finals. The voting process remains the same as in the first semi finals show.

Tonight’s Show

Once again host, Gorden Bonello, surprises  us with his unusual choice of attire for this evening’s show! Seriously Gordon, who is choosing your outfit and why? Besides that, let’s get on to tonight’s acts and see what they have to offer, hoping it’s better than Gordon’s attire.

Concept of Movement

Here we get to see this great dance group, judge Howard’s Golden Buzzer,  perform a nice routine. With great comments from all the judges and a perfectly timed routine, we hope the audience at home pass these to the finals.

Maximum Lock

For obvious reasons, this precision stunt car act couldn’t be performed on stage so the judges were taken to a different locality to view the act live. While we believe that this act was passed through to the semi finals for variety reasons, we do not believe that this act should not go any further. That decision will be taken by the public’s votes later on during the show.

Yan Camilleri

This young musical singer provides us with a rendition of ‘Music of the Night‘, from the famous musical the ‘Phantom of the Opera’. With a nicely dressed up stage, suitable for the act, our young performer goes on to provide us with his rendition of Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber’s legendary composition. We feel the song, that requires a manly and mature touch to it, may have been too ambitious for such a young voice. What do you think?

Michele Panarosa

This amazing singer amazes us once again with a great voice and overall performance of the song, ‘Like it Like That’. This is a voice we love love hearing and we hope that this singer makes it through to the finals. Once again it is in the hands of the voting public.

Ria Gauci

The young solo dancer once again embraces the stage as she energetically  takes it over with her ability to provide a powerful acrobatic dance. Then when you think you have seen all she can do, she goes on to surprise us with an Ariel Hoop act in between it all. This is another act well deserving a place in the finals.

Emma Cutajar

This young songwriter/musician/singer impressed us and the judges with her original song and performance during her auditions, earning her a Golden Buzzer pass from judge Maxine, in tonight’s semi finals. Once again she goes on to give us another original song and once again we are impressed.

Andrea Camilleri

Another young singer this time with dancers accompanying her along with  nice visuals to complete the performance. Andrea gives us her rendition of Christina Aguilera’s ‘Loyal Brave True’, that we simply love.

Mario Morales

The local TV personality goes on to sing ‘It’s a Wonderful World’ for us and the judges, accompanied by some dancers. Whilst we find him charming and of great nature we feel that his rendition of this iconic song was just not as strong as it should have been. Judge Howard may have felt this too as he goes ahead a presses that dreaded red X buzzer! However what shocks us most is the reply to Judge Maxine’s comments made after his performance about the wrong choice of act that accompanies his song. Mario’s reply “I didn’t choose the act, the act was chosen for me” and Maxine’s reaction “Maybe that was our fault then” gives away some secrets of the show. Watch the whole act and judges’ after performance critic below.

Morgan Mage

A young magician with a musical prediction and a surprise up his sleeve. This articulated youngster goes on to give a good performance guessing the judges’ musical choices and then surprises us further with his musical ability by playing the guitar to the correct chosen tune. Whilst his mentalism trick was good, we honestly think this kid has better opportunities with his musical talent and great guitar playing.

Joemike and Layden

The father and son act that stole the nation’s  hearts goes on to give us their Makkjetti act for this round of Malta’s Got Talent. Everything goes well until little Layden forgets the last verse, however he continues with the act and faces the situation like a great man. This is Judge Gordon’s Golden Buzzer act and another act we love and wish to see making it to the semi finals.

The Results

After watching all the 10 acts and with the public voting process over these are this evening’s results of the top 4 acts making their way through.

The two acts with the least votes, are Ria Gauchi and Emma Cutajar. This means that each judge gets to cast a vote for the act they prefer. With two judges voting in favour of Ria and the other two in favour of Emma the final decision now lies on the amount of public votes each received. Ria Gauchi manages to dance her way into Malta’s Got Talent finals.

Finally the time many have been waiting for is with us with the first semi finals of Malta’s Got Talent. This time the show is a live transmission from the MFCC. There was no live audience present but members of the public were able to attend virtually on screens behind the judges. The show’s host Gordon Bonello, opened the show with a satirical song, mainly directed at the judges’ and their reactions during the previous auditions. Gordon’s performance was enhanced with dancers. Whilst Gordon’s hosting was great throughout the show, we are not so sure about his choice of attire!

Understanding The Voting Process

Out of the ten acts we get to see tonight, only three can pass on to the finals. The public can vote for the acts they prefer the most via SMS and the top four acts with the most votes have a chance to be amongst the three chosen. Two acts with the most votes automatically make it through, whereas two acts are left for the judges to decide on. If there is a tie between the four judges, then the act with the most public votes via SMS gets on to pass on to the finals. We expect this to be an entertaining show.

Southville Dancers

This dance group are the first to show what they can perform on tonight’s semifinals. Their dance routine was great, a physical message against oppression and worthy of a semi final act. We do not know how this looked in real life on stage, however we can notice that the lights were not that great looking on television. With several silhouettes and back screen flashes it was difficult to see all the moves and techniques that the dancers brought in to their act.

Geneve Dimech

This young singer/musician gave us another great rock song. Geneve went on to show us her great talent through a strong voice and a wowing performance. The song she sang was dedicated to her nan who recently passed away.

Matthias Camilleri

This pole acrobatic act was themed on the war time. During the act, Matthias showed his skills time and time again with his ability to climb and use the pole in what appears to be a smooth and easy manner. HIs drops were impressive, but there was a drop that made us think that he did not stop on time. Watch the video and tell us what you think?

Sy and Ezaya

These two young Ballroom and Latin dancers show us what they do in a very good dance performance themed to bond, surprising us with a different style dancing to ‘Fireball’. With some nice choreography and a fairly good performance despite their young age, is it enough for them to make through to the finals? We just have to wait and see.

Chris Tanti

This fine guitarist played his guitar to the tune of ‘Isn’t She Lovely’ offering viewers at home a great relaxing rendition with his melodic version of the song.  The full time musician goes on to show us the best one can do with a such a talent and deserves his place in the semi finals. But will this be enough for this fine musician to make his way to the finals?

Christian Alakkad

The 5 year old genius who made his way to the semi finals through Ray Attard’s Golden Buzzer is back on stage to impress us with his memory skills. Christian goes on to impressively and correctly guess the countries and capitals of 67 consecutive flags shown on the screen in just mins. We do not know how entertaining this act is for a general performance but we are sure that this little boy has a great future with Quiz Show Competitions once he grows a little older.

Izzy

Izzy was not official an act that passed on to the semi finals. However Izzy’s act replaced ‘Yada on Heels‘ that was disqualified due to not being able to attend the semi finals because of Covid related reasons.  Izzy went on to give an energetic solo dance performance. We are wondering if judge Ray Attard was being sarcastic whit his comment “Huge Presence”.  What do you think?

Joseph Mangion

Back on stage for the semi finals the human fireworks sound machine, Joseph Mangion or as better known il-Kapxi. Dressed in shorts and a T-Shirt with Kapxi Fireworks written all over it he goes on to give us us viewers more of his ‘Xpuff, XPaff and Tik Tik Tik Tik’ sounds. He is accompanied by a traditional live Band and his act his enhanced with some visuals of Malta fireworks on the screen behind him. Apart from that il-Kapxi reveals a little more of what we expect to see on national television in such a show!

Bruce Bruce Micallef Eynaurd

This comedy act made it through the auditions with a great unique performance. However during the semi finals we feel like Bruce’s performance was less almighty and a little bit off topic at the moment. This was also noted by the judges who did not fail to mention it in their comments. While we get Bruce’s sense of humor and personally found some it quite funny at times, we do not see people in general perceiving it as an act worthy of the finals. We will know soon enough.

Ike and Kaya

The young and talented sweethearts Singer and Rapper are up on stage giving a great enjoyable performance. Tell us, how can not not love this adorable duo? This cool and sweet act may well make it to the finals.

The Results

After watching all the 10 acts and with the public voting process over these are the results of the top 4 acts making their way through.

The two acts with the least votes, surprisingly, are Southville Dance and Matthias Camilleri. These means that the Judges get to cast a vote each for the act they like the most. With 3 of the Judges votes going in favor of Matthias, the pole acrobatic makes it to the finals of Malta’s Got Talent.

Therefore the 3 finalist of this evening’s show are
Joseph Mangion – The Human Fireworks Sound Machine
Ike and Kaya – The Sweet Singer and the Cool Rapper
Matthias – The Acrobatic Pole Dancer

It was surprisingly shocking to see some of the more deserving acts to be outed by the Human Fireworks Sound Machine but the votes are in the public’s hands this time. We await further surprises next week when three of the semi finalist acts are Golden Buzzer receivers!

Internationally renowned tenor, Andrea Bocelli is currently in Malta filming the videos accompanying his Christmas Album, ‘Believe’.

Filming for the 8 songs in the album will take place in Saint John’s Co-Cathedral and other locations, including Fort Saint Elmo. Malta is chosen for the filming of the videos because the Album is themed on the eight pointed cross.  The eight pointed cross, symbol of the Order of St John, is mainly known as the Maltese Cross.

Believe – Andrea Bocelli

‘Believe’ is a collection of uplifting songs inspiring and sustaining Bocelli over the years. The album features ‘Gratia Plena’, two duets with award-winning mezzo-soprano Cecilia Bartoli and other favourites such as ‘Hallelujah’, ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ and ‘Amazing Grace’. It also includes a previously unreleased track from the late, great Italian composer Ennio Morricone. In addition to this, Andrea Bocelli releases for the first time his own interpretations of ‘Ave Maria’ and ‘Padre Nostro’.

‘Believe’ is co-produced by Steven Mercurio and Haydn Bendall and is currently available for sale.

Judge Maxine, is the last to give her Golden Buzzer pass to a deserving act and we see her do this in Episode 6 of Malta’s Got Talent. Her Golden Buzzer goes to a young songwriter and singer Emma Cutajar who shows a lot of talent.

Emma who is just 14 years old, wins her golden pass with a brilliantly composed song. Her poetic lyrics are about her sister, who sadly passed away before Emma was ever born. The heartbreaking lyrics and her performance comes across very sincere, winning over the judges’ and viewers’ hearts.

In this week’s Monday Morning Brew we look at putting on a long standing show in Malta and Gozo.

The Way It Is

Malta and Gozo are small islands, with an average population of about 450,000 people. That number is ever increasing, with many settling in Malta to work here or to retire. Strange as it may sound, this island offers many work opportunities that larger countries are struggling with at the moment. This is good for entertainment purposes since people seek ways to entertain themselves throughout the week.

Malta An Island Of Year Round Entertainment

The island is well equipped with its own share of venues offering live entertainment.  Sadly, most of these are not operating at the moment due to the situation. Other entertainment venues offer alternative entertainment, such as cinemas do. Luckily these are operating but with certain limitations and regulations. Among those offering live entertainment all year round, mostly indoor, we find clubs, theatres, bars and even restaurants. Since the weather in Malta is generally quite hot between June and September, most events happen outdoors.

In summer, Malta offers the ideal grounds offering residents and visitors a vast choice of live outdoor entertainment. This ranges from small open air gigs to large scale internationally acclaimed concerts. Events such as the ‘Island of MTV’ take place annually in Malta and attract many visitors. This year is an exception as they could not be organised due to the Corona Virus.. Some hotels do offer their guests a good variety of professional entertainment with various show productions on their stages. Other hotels seem to focus solely on music. These are mainly solo or duo musician/singer acts who play their way through each night at the venue.

Long Standing Productions In Malta

However what we have not seen on the island is a long standing musical like The Phantom of the Opera or variety shows such as is the Moulin Rouge both currently closed due to the Corona Virus. As a matter of fact, the longest evening production show in Malta we can find is, ‘The Chamber of Mysteries’ a dinner show featuring magic, illusion and mind reading. This has been running since 2011, on a weekly basis, only having to temporarily stop due to the Corona Virus.

It seems, the number of people in Malta makes producing a long standing show an unsustainable task. With shows like the Phantom located in London and Moulin Rouge located in Paris, both iconic destinations with millions of residents and even more visiting, these shows can afford to invest a huge chunk of money on their productions making them sustainable. On the other hand places like Malta, where venues are relatively more expensive to rent and where productions will require to depend on tourism to survive, marketing and production costs are higher and unsustainable on the long run.

Therefore in order to quench the thirst for such productions, producers opt to put on different show productions for a limited period of time. While this is good and offers a variety to residents, it limits the performers’ abilities to excel in their performance and become more proficient in what they deliver.
Some other productions, such as Bla Kondixin, a satirical comedy show in Maltese, use a different script every year. However these annual shows are available for a certain number of weeks, mainly due to the limitation on demand.

A Different Perspective

However there is a much wider perspective to look at besides from the production and performers’ point of view. This is the visitor’s point of view. As ‘The Phantom of The Opera’ is to London and ‘Moulin Rouge’ is to Paris, what does Malta have in terms of a live show production that is to its Capital City, Valletta?  We are not talking about historical acts or a place of interest. There are many of those in Malta. We are talking about a live performance, with professional performers putting on an entertaining show. A show visitors would want to have to go and watch. This could place a long running renowned production on the city’s map.

The opportunity to have this in place could have been during V18. This was the year that Valletta became the European Capital of Culture. The years leading to 2018 could have used the resources available to create, produce and implement such a production. A production that could have become an association to the city itself. Although it would have had to stop due to the pandemic, it would have been able to take off once again once we get through this weird time in the world’s history.

Naturally, there will be other opportunities where such a production could be implemented in the future. Perhaps, in the meantime, someone could identify people who have long standing professional production and performing experience, both locally and abroad, to start planning something of the sort that will last the test of time, ready to implement it as soon as the first opportunity arises.

In this evening’s episode of Malta’s Got Talent here at Entertainment Malta we get to see another selection of acts. Those making their way through to the next stages of the competition range between a Pizzaiolo  and a talkative singer. The highlight of this evening’s show comes towards the end when Judge Maxine awards her and the last Golden Buzzer to a talented young singer, song writer and pianist.

As always, our rundown of the show tonight includes only those acts that get the Yesses required by the judges. However, one thing we note is that tonight is the only night that we get to see 3 acts not making it through to the next stages. During all previous episodes there were 2 acts not making it through, so tonight was a little different.

Tonight’s Passing Acts

The Dance Group

So tonight’s shows starts off with Dance Lab a dance group consisting of mixed dancers aged between 12 and 28 years old.  Dance lab go on to give us a modern dance full of energy and sharp movements. Their various elements of dance earn them 4 big yesses from our Judges.

The Traditional Magic Act

Next to perform in tonight’s show is 25 year old Christian Brincat. Christian together with some dancers in feathered costumes, bring some traditional styled magic to the show. His ‘Old School Trick’, as Judge Howard describes it, and performance earns him the 4 Yesses he requires.

The Young Dancer

Ria Gauci is a 9 year old dancer, who’s been training dance for 2 years. She brings on stage a brilliant dance routine, demonstrating the discipline and dedication during her training. In fact, Ria reminds us of the excellent dancer featured in Sia’s music video ‘Chandelier‘. Lea goes on to rightly earn her 4 Yesses pushing her into the next stages.

Another Pole Dance Act

On stage is Naomi Borg Leyland who is 23 years old and brings to the show an expertly carried out pole dance act. Naomi trains 4-5 times a week and also owns her own pole dance academy. Her act, as one expects, is as Judge Sarah says, ‘Sexy in the classiest of ways’ with the judges giving her the 4 Yesses she requires to get through the next stage.

The Juggling Pizzaiolo.

23 Year old Giuseppe Foggia is up next with a rather unusual act. Originally from Italy but now living and working in Malta as a pizzaiolo, Giuseppe entertains the judges and viewers at home with his fun and fast pizza spinning/juggling act. He is rightly awarded 4 Yesses from our judges.

The Talking Pensioner

Next to grace Malta’s Got Talent’s stage is 75 year old pensioner, Freddie. Freddie is a singer and goes on to tell the judges how he lost his wife about a year ago. As his conversation lingers, Freddie’s life story is told from how he worked all his life to support his family and build a home for them. He goes on to recall how his passion for singing was set in the back of his mind during all those years until he reached retirement. It was then that Freddie felt like there was a part missing. His vivid conversation and story goes on until it is interrupted by some adverts…

The Sentimental Songwriter, Singer and Pianist

14year old Emma Cutajar is on stage together with her piano. She recalls how her sister died before Emma was born and with that in mind wrote a song dedicating it to her sister. As she plays the piano and sings, her passion and sentiment is expressed very well, touching the hearts of both judges and us viewers. Her beautifully lyrical song and performance earns Emma the fifth and last Golden Buzzer push allowed, rightly awarded to her by judge Maxine. We look forward to seeing Emma in the semi finals and are wondering what she will be performing next. In the meantime, watch and enjoy her whole performance on tonight’s show.

…Freddie’s Back!

Freddie is back on our screens, still talking to the judges. The conversation finally leads him to his charismatic performance, an Elvis song. Apparently this is not judge Howard’s kind of song, however Freddie still earns a Yes from all the judges putting him through the next stages. We cannot help but love Freddie as we see him try to continue the conversation even after voting is over and all the way until host Gordon helps him off stage. You have to watch Freddie!

Conclusion

And that ends Entertainment Malta’s rundown of tonight’s episode of Malta’s Got Talent. As always the show did offer some good entertainment and things that were not expected, like the Pizziolo.  Our excitement is growing as each episode passes, looking forward to seeing those making it through to the live shows. Maxine’s Golden Buzzer to Emma was the highlight of tonight’s show but Freddie left an everlasting impression too.

The moment the show’s host Gordon Bonello showed some emotions during their act, we knew this was the act to receive his push of Golden Buzzer. Father and Son duo, Joemike and Layden were the receivers of this gateway into the semi finals.

 Joemike and Layden have been going at this for at least a year as we found some interesting footage from June 2019, when Layden was just 4 years old.

The traditional Maltese humorous song ‘Makjetta‘, goes back many years however it is a tradition that is loosing ground.
