The moment all Malta eagerly awaits year after year is finally here. Well, almost here as tonight we got to experience the first of the Eurovision Song Contest 2021 semi-finals.

Destiny – Eurovision Song Contest 2021 The journey so far.

Destiny was chosen to represent Malta in 2020, but that never happened due to Covid. This was very disappointing, not only for Destiny and all the other singers but also for the Maltese public. Just in case you are not aware, the Maltese public, in general, loves the Eurovision Song Contest. Every year hopes rise high. So far Malta managed to get into the second and third places a couple of times before, but never the top spot. Destiny was going to represent Malta in 2020 with the song ‘All Of My Love’. Destiny and Year 2021

Suddenly after a long year of ups and downs, we’re in 2021. But now we have vaccines and have a better knowledge of Covid, so the game is on. Then in March, we hear for the first time Malta’s entry sung by Destiny ‘Je Me Casse’.  And boy what a surprisingly refreshing change to Malta’s usual choice of songs. It becomes a hit with the Maltese public straight away.

The heat is on and Destiny quickly became a favorite to win. The song and the accompanying ‘hot’ video are a hit over socials, with a whopping  8M+hits and counting on Youtube.

The Rehearsals

In May, Destiny leaves Malta with her entourage and heads off to Rotterdam for her rehearsals for the big night the week to follow. She hits all local news outlets, except ours, and her costume creates a social media frenzy. To place it simply, people did not like her pink costume. Now that the night is on, here is our view of Destiny’s pink costume in just three words, we loved it!

Next rehearsal Destiny shows herself in a silver costume and pink boots. We love the silver costume too, but the boots don’t really match.

But then the final dress rehearsal comes along and Destiny seems to be complete, silver dress with silver boots and stuns everyone. Interpretation, attitude, and energy portray a true star that will shine long after this contest is over.

The Night Arrives

So we are finally here, the night all Malta awaits and we know Destiny will be closing the show. The show is being presented by Nikkie de Jager, Chantal Janzen, Jan Smit and Edsilia Rombley. In total sixteen songs will be competing for the ten spots in the finals up for grabs tonight.  But at the time of writing Ireland is about to go on. So far we’ve seen some fascinating costumes and gimmicks including a Russian Doll costume and CGI magic effects but none of the songs we’ve heard so far are ones we like much. Ireland is currently finishing off its song and this is the first one that we like here at Entertainment Malta.

This is followed by a ‘Lady Gaga’ soundalike with a devilish theme and exactly after an act that had time to work on his angelic wings! We are currently listening to Croatia and we like this song too. Another song we like is that of Israel which hits a whopping B6 note, the highest note in Eurovision history. Azerbaijan also provides us with a song we like.

Finally, the moment we’ve been waiting for arrives and the presenters introduce Destiny. From the first shot, Destiny rules the TV screen in her silver dress and her interpretation throughout is simply fantastic. Great voice, full of energy, and flawless. Otherwise in just one word; WOW! While we are happy to see Malta making it through the finals, it is a little disappointing to see Ireland and Croatia leave the competition at this point.

After ten episodes we now have all the nine Finalists Malta’s Got Talent 2020 ready to compete this Sunday during the finals. This is the complete list of the nine finalists, one of whom will make history, walking away with €25,000 as the winning act of this talent competition.

So from our list we can see that we have three dance acts, four singing acts and two variety acts that will be competing for the prize in this week’s finals. From the nine acts making their way through to the finals, two were Golden Buzzer acts.

Internationally renowned tenor, Andrea Bocelli is currently in Malta filming the videos accompanying his Christmas Album, ‘Believe’.

Filming for the 8 songs in the album will take place in Saint John’s Co-Cathedral and other locations, including Fort Saint Elmo. Malta is chosen for the filming of the videos because the Album is themed on the eight pointed cross.  The eight pointed cross, symbol of the Order of St John, is mainly known as the Maltese Cross.

Believe – Andrea Bocelli

‘Believe’ is a collection of uplifting songs inspiring and sustaining Bocelli over the years. The album features ‘Gratia Plena’, two duets with award-winning mezzo-soprano Cecilia Bartoli and other favourites such as ‘Hallelujah’, ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ and ‘Amazing Grace’. It also includes a previously unreleased track from the late, great Italian composer Ennio Morricone. In addition to this, Andrea Bocelli releases for the first time his own interpretations of ‘Ave Maria’ and ‘Padre Nostro’.

‘Believe’ is co-produced by Steven Mercurio and Haydn Bendall and is currently available for sale.

In our second Monday Morning Brew, we take a look at the real cost of entertainment. To be more precise, we are looking at the costs of having no entertainment in Malta or the world.

Imagine All The People

Imagine a world where there would be no form of entertainment. No arts, no music, no theatre, no cinema, no magic, no song, no dance, no television, no games shows and no radio. Nothing but pure reliance on waking up, going to do a job, eating and sleeping.  Fortunately we are nowhere near there and we guess we will never be. The world is reliant on the arts, on media and on entertainment to give us a break from the harsh reality we live in. In short, entertainment plays a vital role in everyone’s lives, whether people realise it or not. The cost of not having entertainment is much higher than the actual costs of engaging it.

The Closure Of Bars And Nightclubs

Let’s take for instance last week where we got to see the authorities closing down clubs and bars until December, across Malta and Gozo. This, as we all know, is being done due to the Corona Virus and they are measures that have to be taken to control the situation. However it is obvious that these measures will hit the entertainment industry hard. Many musicians, DJs and entertainers depend on performing in some venues that are temporarily shut down.  It is also costing the venues their past efforts, money and of course their intake during the coming weeks. On the other hand it is costing the authorities revenue in taxes. Then we have the receiver, who actually receives the entertainment. Luckily the receiver can go online and check out the latest music, games, film or whatever sort of entertainment they are into. But what if even that was not available?

What About Theatre?

Imagine no theatre. There will not be any acting jobs, there will not exist a platform for upcoming film stars. Many acting schools will close down and students will not have the opportunity to share a talent they may have within them. TV presenters would be terrible as most have a good background in acting before taking on presenting. In short the quality of life would be much lower and people will not be as happy as they are if entertainment is present.

Just looking at the money wheel, it is  obvious that this whole industry generates a great inflow of cash and other non financial benefits globally.

Survival Mode

Luckily we are seeing performers doing their best to survive the situation they are in. Most are adopting themselves to fit in with the challenges. Like theatre, with many productions still going ahead with their performance despite the regulations that impede the number of attendees for each performance. Some entertainment in Malta is being shifted to online performances, as it is across the world. However, this does not offer the same experience as it does during a live event, with an audience present. Here in Malta, FestivalsMalta have included a drive in concert with a live band, “Park ‘NJoy”.  This concept appears to be going down well with people. Television is still producing their entertainment shows, with Covid-19 measures in place. In other words, the industry is doing its best to overcome the obstacles and continue providing that so much needed entertainment for people to unwind to when stress kicks in.

How Entertainment Can Affect Your Event or Venue

When a person or entity is looking for entertainment for their event or venue, the first thing that comes to mind is the cost that comes with it. Does that cost fit within the budget? Can that cost determine the quality or quantity of what the booker expects? If that cost seems reasonable for what the booker requires?

These are all good questions but other questions should be considered too. Questions such as, is it better to have high quality entertainment for shorter periods than lower quality for longer durations? What value will I be giving back to the guests at my event or patrons at my venue? Is what I am booking as proficient as I expect them to be?

Expectancy And Deliverance

When entertainment is booked, the booker gets nothing physically present that remains with the booker. What they do get however is an experience. Therefore the product a booker purchases is actually an intangible service. Being left with nothing but a memory, the experience is the memory that that entertainment can provide. The longer lasting the memory is, the more valuable that entertainment should cost.

Having no entertainment at special occasions, corporate events or venues such as hotels can cost as much as booking the most expensive entertainment. When the cost is the image or business revenue, one needs to find the best option they can afford. On the other hand, having too much low quality entertainment can be as much damaging. With no entertainment one risks having guests becoming bored. Being too quiet at a special occasion may not always be the way to celebrate. In venues such as a family hotel, guests may feel unexcited. In turn they may find no value in what the venue offers and may not return another time.

This is the real cost of having no entertainment. This is why people need to show apreatation to entertainment and entertainers. After all it’s part of the art and culture of each and every nation.

The Entertainers is a light entertainment variety programme on Net TV every Saturday evening at 8:30pm. The programme is a Spiteri Lucas Entertainment production.

 The TV show features J Anvil who presents the variety. Guest artists including singers, magicians and other entertainers together with the Spiteri Lucas Band are a regular feature. The mixture makes Saturday evenings a pleasure to enjoy at home in the company of this programme.

The programme features several sections including songs sung by J Anvil and a cocktail section from Mixologist James Aquilina among other things.
